What is Gold Plating?

Gold plating is a process that involves applying a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal (in our case stainless steel or sterling silver) through electroplating. The gold layer measures to be just about 0.01 to 0.03 micrometers in thickness. Despite the thinness of the gold layer, there is definitely a real gold presence left on the jewelry.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is a precious metal alloy that's mainly composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. This combination is used to improve the metal's durability and strength while preserving the desirable qualities of silver. Sterling silver is known for its radiant look and is often used in jewelry due to its elegance and malleability. It is also stamped with a "925" mark symbolizing the 92.5% silver content.
Can I get Sterling Silver wet? Yes, you can get sterling silver wet without damaging it. Water alone does not damage genuine sterling silver. But, the chemicals in certain types of water can. Sterling silver naturally changes over time but how quickly depends on how often you wear it and the chemicals that are exposed to it.

What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is a durable and corrosion-resistant alloy often used in jewelry. It consists mainly of iron, with chromium being a key component that provides its resistance to rust and tarnish. Stainless steel jewelry is known for its strength, affordability, and resistance to scratches, making it a popular choice for those seeking durable and long-lasting accessories.
Can I get gold plated stainless steel wet? Yes, stainless steel jewelry is generally waterproof and can be worn in water without causing damage to the metal. Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and rust, so getting it wet from activities like swimming, showering, or washing your hands will not tarnish or harm the jewelry. However, extended exposure to water, especially in chlorinated or saltwater environments, might eventually cause the gold plating to wear off more quickly over time.
  • How to care for your jewelry:

    - Specifically for sterling silver jewelry, wear it regularly: The natural oils from your skin will keep your sterling silver jewelry shiny.
    - Avoid prolonged exposure to water or moisture
    - Dry your jewelry thoroughly after it gets wet
    - Avoid exposing your jewelry to harsh chemicals
    - Clean regularly: Mix together mild soap and warm water, gently scrub the jewelry with a soft cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a clean cloth. Specifically for sterling silver, use the same method above or simply use a silver polishing cloth.
    - Store properly: When not in use, store your jewelry individually in a cool, dry place like a velvet lined jewelry box or baggie (all orders come with a specialty Sanaa. jewelry baggie) to prevent oxidation and scratching.
